Short bioLevente Csikor recently became a Senior Research Scientist at NCS Cyber (Singtel Group), focusing on pen-testing of automotives, IoT, and (human-support) robots. Before the lateral movement within the Singtel Group, Levente was with Trustwave (a Singtel Company) at the Emerging Technologies Lab focusing on the security aspects of Operation technology, autonomous vehicles, 5G, and IPv6. From 2019, he has been a Senior Research Fellow at the NUS-Singtel Cyber Security Research and Development Laboratory, National University of Singapore. Before coming to Singapore, he has been a Research Fellow at the High Speed Networks Laboratory (HSN Lab), Budapest University of Technology and Economics (BME), where he has received his M.Sc. and a Ph.D. degree in 2010 and 2015, respectively. At HSN Lab, he was involved in the EU-funded FP7 Unify project and several industrial projects carried out between HSN Lab and Ericsson Research (Ericsson TrafficLab Hungary). During his career, Levente has also been a postdoctoral research associate at INTRIG, University of Campinas (Brazil, 2018), and at the School of Computing Science, University of Glasgow (UK, 2017). His interests focused on many different aspects of Software-Defined Networking (SDN) and Network Function Virtualization (NFV), particularly the data plane performance of various software-based network functions, troubleshooting, OpenFlow, P4, and network orchestration in heavy- and light-weight virtualization environments. In recent years, his main scope of research has focused on security and privacy. He has been dealing with Denial-of-Service attacks at networking levels and privacy aspects of the recent DNS-over-HTTPS protocol, the latest highly programmable SmartNICs and their potential in next-generation computing, storage, and network, and penetration testing of next-generation connected architectures in several vertical domains (OT, IoT, Automotive, 5G, robotics, etc.). |

In this paper, we evaluate whether the de facto Tuple Space Search (TSS) packet classification algorithm used in popular software networking stacks such as the Open vSwitch is robust against low-rate denial-of-service attacks. We present the Tuple Space Explosion (TSE) attack that exploits the fundamental space/time complexity of the TSS algorithm.TSE can degrade the switch performance to 12\% of its full capacity with a very low packet rate (0.7 Mbps) when the target only has simple policies such as, "allow some, but drop others". Worse, an adversary with additional partial knowledge of these policies can virtually bring down the target with the same low attack rate. Interestingly, TSE does not generate any specific traffic patterns but only requires arbitrary headers and payloads which makes it particularly hard to detect.Due to the fundamental complexity characteristics of TSS, unfortunately, there seems to be no complete mitigation to the problem. As a long-term solution, we suggest the use of other algorithms (e.g., HaRP) that are not vulnerable to the TSE attack. As a short-term countermeasure, we propose MFCGuard that carefully manages the tuple space and keeps packet classification fast.}, booktitle = {Proc.
